SAJA BESAYA NATIONAL PARK

Heartland to the Cantabrian livestock and at the same time synonymous of dense beech forests and deer, this silent enclave is home to a rich patrimonial culture where generations of its inhabitants have shaped the landscape over the centuries not only to leave their trace, but to have become part of it as a result.

Pleasantly surprising the visitor, Woodpeckers , together with unique mammal species such as the Mountain Cat or the European Hare, are just some of the local wildlife to be found living side by side in this natural park.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Transfer from Santander or Bilbao port or airport ( 50min. or 1hr 50min. respectively) to accommodation in B&B country house in the Saja Besaya Natural Park.
DAY 2: Excursion to La Jaya Cruza. Return to lodgings and visit to the Carrejo Mill.
DAY 3: Ascent to Bucierca and hiking back down in search of Woodpecker.
DAY 4: Excursion from the Ucieda Houses. Visit to La Fuentona and oak forest.
DAY 5: Visit to Oyambre National Park. Wandering the streets of Santillana del Mar.
DAY 6: Return, and time permitting, visit to the caves and cliffs on the way back.

SOMIEDO NATIONAL PARK

Somiedo is the ideal place to find traditional pastoral activities carried out in a natural setting in the Cantabrian Ranges. Birds of prey, along with necrophagous birds as well as the typical countryside birds like the Garden Warbler await the keen eye of the birdwatcher here. Natural orchid gardens are also common in this idyllic natural paradise. Sporadic sightings of the larger inhabitants of the area, the Bear and Iberian Wolf, are possible if the visitor is prepared to wait and watch.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Transfer from Oviedo, Santander or Bilbao ( 2hrs, 3.5hrs and 4.5hrs respectively) to accomModation in B&B country house in the Valle de Lago in Somiedo National Park.
DAY 2: Excursion to las Brañas de Sousas in the Valle deL Lago. Possible visit to La Casa del Oso.( The House of The Bear.)
DAY 3: Trek to las Brañas de Mumian from Llamardal through the mountain pass of Somiedo. Visit to the Caunedo Ethnographic Museum. From La Peral, dusk wait for sighting of Brown Bear.
DAY 4: Visit to la braña de La Pornacal in the Pigueña Valley. In Perlunes, dusk wait for sighting of Brown Bear.
DAY 5: Interprative excursion around the The Lakes of Saliencia. Visit to Veigas Ethnographic Museum. This may be complemented with a further excursión between La Malva and Castro.
DAY 6: Morning trip to Orderias and return to airport.

These outings may need to be changed to ensure successful observations of the Brown Bear due to its consistently changing habits.

MOUNT PALENTINA

From the lunar landscape at its summit to the refreshingly lush riverside forests at its base, the very little known Mt.Palentina will impress the visitor with its intensity and beauty. Blessed with a Mediterranean climate, this spectacular mountain is home to a wealth of flora and fauna with a special mention going to the Brown Bear and Iberian Wolf. For those who wish to complement their nature walks with cultural visits, this marvelous corner of the Cantabrian Ranges offers the visitor the chance to experience the historical legacy left by the Romans during their time in this area of Palencia.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Transfer form Santander of Bilbao airport (2hrs or 3hrs respectively) to accommodation in B&B country house in Cardaño de Arriba.
DAY 2: Excursion to the foothills of Peña Prieta. Visit to one of the closed basin lagoons.
DAY 3: Excursion around Lores.
DAY 4: Dawn wait for sighting of Brown Bear and Iberian Wolf in Polentinos. Afternoon visit to the Romanico Palentino.
DAY 5: Trekking from Vidrieros.
DAY 6: Trekking along the South face of the Espigüete.
DAY 7: Return to airport after hiking around the mountain pass of Piedrasluengas.
