8 DAYS HIKING TOUR IN PICOS DE EUROPA, SPAIN
8 DAYS HIKING TOUR IN PICOS DE EUROPA, SPAIN
The Cantabrian Mountains are a long mountain range that dominates northwestern Spain. The jewel of this range is the Picos de Europa National Park, which consists of three main massifs—eastern, central, and western—spread across the autonomous communities of León, Cantabria, and Asturias.
The influence of the nearby Atlantic Ocean and its abundant humidity create a contrast between the lush beech forests and green meadows and the rugged grayish limestone peaks, resulting in a spectacular landscape. This natural creation has been shaped by farmers throughout history, resulting in a rich historical and cultural heritage that remains to this day.
For eight days, we will visit this wild corner of southern Europe, from the sea to the mountains, discovering some of its best spots with our expert international hiking and nature guide, Pablo Pérez. We will go on beautiful walks, where we will not only enjoy the incredible landscape, but also learn about its nature and history, combining a journey between villages and staying in the best hotel in the Picos.
Some days we will walk in a linear mode, sleeping in charming mountain villages while a taxi transports our luggage, and other days we will stay in a single hotel, where we can enjoy a delicious Spanish wine while contemplating the mountains before savoring an excellent traditional mountain dinner. This trip is for six visitors and the guide.
Recommendations
For these routes, which are low in difficulty but medium in terms of toughness, it is advisable to be in good physical shape and to have hiking boots suitable for sunny and rainy conditions, along with good mountain footwear and hiking poles.
We will walk an average of eight hours a day, covering distances of around 15 km and an average elevation of 800 meters on rocky terrain at an altitude of around 1,500 meters above sea level, where we will need a 1-liter water bottle.
The pace of the hike will be gentle but steady, with the aim of keeping the group together so that we can enjoy and learn about the interesting natural wealth of the area. We therefore recommend bringing lightweight binoculars if you wish.
Due to the proximity of the sea, the weather in Picos de Europa can vary greatly, so we must be prepared for any weather changes during the trip, where the guide will give priority to the smooth running of the activity, which may lead to changes in the itinerary.
Pablo will pick up participants at Bilbao Airport in a 9-seater van and head west. During the journey, we will stop to visit the impressive coastal cliffs of the Asturian coast, where, if we have time, we can take a short walk to enjoy the views of the Cantabrian Sea and its rugged cliffs.
We will leave the ocean behind and head into the mountains, where we will make a short cultural stop in Cangas de Onís, Asturias, to see its famous medieval bridge before heading to the nearby Hotel Don Pelayo, where we will also have dinner.
In the morning, we will take the public bus that takes us up to the famous Covadonga Lakes in the western massif, where you can enjoy a pleasant circular walk to the Vega de Ario Refuge from the lakes, with impressive views of the central and eastern massifs.
After lunch, we will visit the jewels of the historical heritage of the Picos de Europa, the famous Cathedral of Covadonga and the cave of La Santina, the patron saint of Asturias, before driving to the rural cottage in Amieva for dinner and to organise the next hike, where Pablo drops the van and returns later by taxi, because from here we will have our own backpack for three days.
This historic route was the ancient road that connected the coast of Asturias with the interior of León for the exchange of goods, which even became a genuine Roman road. Today it is a beautiful trail that runs between the foothills of the Western Massif of the Picos de Europa and the Ponga Natural Park.
We will take advantage of the idyllic location of the Vegabaño mountain refuge to have dinner and sleep there, a magical place in dense forests inhabited by the elusive wildcat, the enigmatic Cantabrian brown bear, and the endemic Iberian wolf, among other beautiful wild animals.
We will leave the enchanted refuge behind and enter the dense beech forests to climb the nearby Pico Jario peak, which offers excellent views, from where we will descend to the Dobres hills and begin the descent through dense oak forests to Soto de Valdeón. We will follow the trail to the nearby Posada de Valdeón, where we will spend the night in the heart of the Picos de Europa de León at the Hotel Eigon. This is a very peaceful place with abundant wildlife and excellent views, as well as delicious blue cheeses.
We leave the wonderful Valdeón valley with the Western Massif behind us and skirting below the Cifuentes rocks, the Central Massif to our left, as we climb up through the Vacas sheepfold towards the historic El Mercadillo trail, which was formerly used by travelers from these valleys to reach the market in Liébana, where we are headed.
Along the way, we may be lucky enough to spot the endangered grey partridge, as this is one of the best places to see it, until we reach the Remoña pass with its impressive views, where we will eat a sandwich before continuing along Mount Quebres to Fuente Dé.
In Fuente Dé, where the Deva River rises from the top of its steep 800-meter cliffs, we will drive the van again to the Hotel El Oso in Cosgaya, where we will have dinner and spend the night.
After an excellent breakfast at the Hotel El Oso, we will travel by van to Fuente Dé, where we will take the cable car up to the balcony of the Central Massif of the National Park in the province of Cantabria. We will begin our hike along the gentle trail to the Covarrobres pass and, depending on the weather and the condition of the group, we will either take the much harder and more challenging trail to the Horcados Rojos pass or we will make the circular return via Áliva to the base of the cable car in Fuente Dé.
Depending on the conditions, it may even be possible to reach the summit of Torre de Horcados Rojos and walk down the circular route from Fuente Dé, but it will be up to the guide to decide which is the best option.
On this spectacular and popular route, we will experience the grandeur of the impressive limestone mountains of the iconic Picos de Europa up close and will almost certainly see interesting birds such as griffon vultures and short-toed eagles, and with a lot of luck, wallcreepers and bearded vultures. What we do hope to see are the agile Cantabrian chamois running around the hills.
We will return by van to the charming Hotel El Oso in Cosgaya, where we will enjoy a well-deserved rest and a delicious dinner.
As the final day of hiking, we will climb from Cosgaya to Doberganes, near the San Glorio pass, from where we will take the circular route of Pico Jano through large oak groves and livestock fields. The views of the three massifs of the Picos de Europa from the top of this conglomerate rock peak are breathtaking. Depending on the weather, we can also visit Collado de Llesba, where we can once again contemplate the peaks from the iconic sculpture of the Bear.
We will descend back to Potes, a historic village in the heart of Liébana in Cantabria, which we can visit and have time to buy some souvenirs before returning to the Hotel El Oso to spend the last night of this fantastic trip in the Picos de Europa.
Depending on the flight schedule, we can adjust our departure from Cosgaya through the La Hermida gorge and make a stop to visit the Cantabrian coast or, if there is enough time, even make a brief visit to the city of Bilbao before heading to the airport.
Visitors may choose to stay in Bilbao for additional nights to explore the city.
